You've reached Ms. Lalonde. Unfortunately, I'm in no position to take your call right now. Please, do leave me a message and I shall get back to you as soon as I can. Thank you for your time.
I don't. It's a bit on the late side to be out, admittedly.
[ But it's important they talk all the same. The question is -- ]
Where to start? You already know that Reno will be joining us soon. He's a coworker of mine and he isn't particularly good at keeping his mouth from running or being tactful about things when it does. Given that, I don't expect he'll filter himself with regards to our jobs or the nature of our work should it come up or he feel the need to bring it up for whatever reason, which is what I feel you need to be aware of.
[ She takes a small breath, then proceeds. ]
Reno and I, we're Turks. In simplest terms, we're the equivalent of black operatives for the Shin-Ra Company, which is the world power in our world. The company's enemies are our enemies. To my knowledge, none have arrived here, but the arrival of one or more willing to bring quarrels from our world here wouldn't surprise me. Their ability to detect us also wouldn't surprise me.
[ And she'll pause. Let Roxanne get a word in edgewise. Roxanne is a sharp woman, after all. Valeria expects she can see where the expected concerns would arise, the unspoken reasons for this, all of this. ]
[Mom is quiet during it all, just...simply listening. Her mind works overtime to put the pieces together. Eventually, she nods.]
In other words, if enemies of Shin-Ra arrive here, which is a very real possibility, then certain individuals could be in danger. Would they target people they're close to or would they simply go after Shin-Ra employees?
I would like to say that it depends, but wishful thinking is dangerous in my profession. If enemies of the company are willing to go after Shin-Ra employees under these circumstances, I wouldn't put it past them to target the people we're close to.
[ Which is and has been a concern of hers since she started traveling with Bro and Mom. Back when it was just the three of them, things were different. She trusted them to be able to handle themselves if it came to pass that it was necessary; she intended to cross the bridge and have this talk if it was necessary, of course, but she wasn't worried, not after she got to know them a bit better. That, and it was easier to keep up with one another. Now, though, there's more than a handful of teenagers traveling with them, teenagers she still doesn't know all that well who are near and dear to one another and Bro and Roxanne. While there may be safety in numbers and they very likely know how to handle themselves as well, the risk is greater, too. If something were to happen... she falls quiet for a moment, then -- ]
[ A good bit of weight lifts off Valeria's shoulders as she listens to Mom. There's still a good bit of guilt there and a little lingering anxiety, but they're already on the way to resolving themselves for the most part or at the very least on the way to drawing back a bit. Even if she'd had her suspicions, hearing as much from someone else, from Mom... well, it puts her at ease a little more than it would have otherwise. Pausing, she contemplates that question. ]
[ In a sense. A Turk never ceases to be a Turk, after all, but here, it's... complicated. There is no Shin-Ra here, no AVALANCHE, no Turks. Still, that's... not quite what Roxanne is asking. She pauses, considering her words. ]
I suppose the answer depends on what your definition of 'hard' is.

I'm sorry. I should have said something sooner.

You had your reasons for not telling me. What's important is that you've told me now.
[She smiles at Val kindly.]
The kids are more than capable of handling themselves, and their Pokemon add to the protection. They're tough.
[Mom's quiet for a moment.]
Is there anything else you need to tell me?

I... think that's everything? I think.

...Was it hard living that kind of life style?

[She sighs softly.]
Why do you live this lifestyle?
[Her tone is more inquisitive than anything else. It really isn't her place to judge.]
